Layers of timeworn white paint have fractured into an extraordinary alligatored surface, exposing warm rust tones beneath, a finish only decades under the elements can create. Though matching in design and scale, each urn has weathered differently, likely from years spent in separate areas of the same garden, creating subtle variations that add to their authenticity and appeal.

Handmade and wood-fired centuries ago, these reclaimed French terracotta tiles are an authentic building material that reflects the warm, rustic, and informal style of the French countryside. Originally crafted for flooring in stately residences, farmhouses, monasteries, and historic buildings throughout France, they possess a history and character that simply cannot be replicated.

Each tile was individually handmade using natural French clay, dried in the sun, and fired in traditional wood-burning kilns for several days. Because temperatures varied throughout the kiln, every firing produced a beautiful range of earthy tones and distinctive flashing marks that remain highly prized today.

These are true reclaimed floor tiles, not newly manufactured reproductions or parefeuille roof tiles. Centuries of foot traffic have created a naturally worn patina, subtle texture, and perfectly imperfect surface that give authentic reclaimed terracotta its unmistakable charm. No two tiles are exactly alike, and variations in color, size, thickness, and edge wear are part of what makes these floors so extraordinary.

Each lot we offer is one-of-a-kind and sold as a complete lot. Once sold, an identical collection can never be recreated.

• Character: Creates a richly variegated floor where no two areas are exactly alike, offering the warmth, movement, and depth that only genuine reclaimed French terracotta can provide.

• Condition: Tiles have been lightly brushed to remove loose debris but have not been scrubbed, cleaned, or chemically treated. Good overall antique condition with minor chips, edge wear, occasional losses, surface staining, and remnants of original mortar consistent with age, use, and careful reclamation.

• Installation: Suitable for interior flooring, most wall applications, wet areas, and exterior patios when properly installed.

• Sealing: Tiles may be left in their natural, unsealed state, as shown in the photographs. While sealing is optional, a topical sealer is recommended to improve durability and protect the surface. If a richer, more saturated appearance is desired, a penetrating enhancing sealer may be used to deepen the natural colors, as illustrated in the "Unsealed vs. Sealed" photo. Because every installation is unique, we recommend discussing finish options with your installer and approving on-site sample areas before proceeding with the final application.
