Sold

A French 19th century metal grape harvesting basket. This harvester’s vessel features two original woven rope straps, used to help the workers carry it on their back thus allowing for ease of picking grapes. Naturally aged with a beautiful warm patina, the hod would make a lovely focal piece hanging on a wall filled with a bouquet of dried botanicals, or used as a planter in any room of the home.

Also known as a grape “hod” or “hotte”, this large basket, or “pannier”, was carried on a person's back and used to transport grapes or other agricultural produce. Hottes were used during the 19th and early 20th centuries for collecting grapes in vineyards. The grape picker would cut bunches of grapes and place them into the hotte, which would then be emptied into a crate to be transported to the cellar for the next step in wine making.

  • Found in France
