Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Surround
A decorative arts and crafts fireplace surround salvaged from a home in the midwest. Although it could be installed around a firebox again, we believe it would make a beautiful decorative piece installed into the backsplash behind a kitchen cooktop.
Originally installed around a coal-burning fireplace, this piece of history once consisted of three parts. The surround, a grate, and a removable door, known as a “summer door”. When the fireplace was not in use, the door was mounted onto the frame, keeping warm air from escaping in the winter, or entering during the summer.
Found in Nebraska, from the late 19th century
Cast iron with ornate floral motif around the frame
The back of the frame bears the “W.L. Sharp and Son 1895” copyright and is embossed with “No. 907”
Measures approximately 30.5" W x 30.25" H x 2.5" D overall
The opening is approximately 24.25" W x 18.75" H x 1" D
