Antique French Stoneware Bottle
Gorgeous antique French stoneware bottles dating to 1880. Originally used to bottle cider (Cidre Bouché: cider topped with a cork), these bottles from the north-west of France have a lovely crazed appearance and variation in color that adds visual interest and decorative appeal. Use as a vase filled with a small cutting of flowers or arrange as part of a grouping on your mantel for an eye-catching vignette.
Although typically known for its wine, France is the largest cider producing country in the world and has been making the libation since the 1st century BC. During Medieval times, cider became the mainstay as the water was impure and often unfit to drink. This was particularly the case between 1400 - 1700 when the plague was rampant; children even drank cider since it was much safer than drinking water!
