Antique Harrods Hot Closet Meat Screen

Featured in the 1895 Harrods London luxury department store catalog, this firescreen would have been an essential tool in the affluent Victorian kitchen.
When the meat is roasting, this screen is placed in front of the fire, to condense the heat as much as possible. Made of “well-seasoned” wood, lined with tin, and fitted with two shelves, which acts as a warmer for the plates and dishes. Meat screens are mentioned in household inventories and auction catalogs as far back as c.1750.
