Civil War Era Folding Camp Chair
Antique E.W. Vaill Civil War folding camp chair with original carpet seat dating to the early-mid 1860s.
A cross pattern in gold, red and cream wool carpet upholstery stretches across the seat and is showing some wear in the back corners as well as some fraying along the seams. Both the front and back seams of the panel are bound with leather and tacked in with iron upholstery nails.
The chair folds at the crossing of the front and back legs in an X configuration. A turned stretcher on both the front and back gives the chair support. The chair’s back features and unadorned arched crest rail. The chair itself is solid wood, perhaps painted or lacquered ebony and has some craquelure.
Once a popular choice of seating for Officers during the Civil War, this chair would be a great collector’s item for a history buff.

Small tears on both back corners of the seat (as found)
