Shippam's Sausage Boxes (Pair)
Shippam's began in 1786 as a grocery store in Chichester, England. Charles Shippam opened the store initially selling butter, cheese and meat collected from the West Country, but later expanded to create a line of sausages that were so popular that they became known as the "Celebrated 'Chichester' Sausage". This vintage pair of transport boxes from the early 1920s would have originally carried glass jars filled with the famous sausages.
Boxes are made from cardboard with metal staples to join the corners, etc
There is some water damage on the outside as well as a few tears in the cardboard, consistent with age and use
Smaller box bears a 1922 King George V 9 pence stamp
The small box’s lid is still attached on the back side of the box
Great collector’s item
Small box measures: 12.75” L x 8.5” W x 9.25” H
