Vintage bread baskets were once used in a French bakery for proofing bread dough prior to baking. Hand-woven from wicker, the baskets would have originally been lined with linen. Twisted and wrapped around the center of the basket, the bread’s ends would be joined together to make a ring, or “Couronne”, meaning crown in French.
