Vintage French Baguette Basket

$85.00

Vintage French woven willow bannetons (bread-proofing baskets) with original hand-sewn linen liner.

These baskets, with their wonderful aged patina, are perfect French country accents for the modern home. We love displaying them in the kitchen on a table or island as a centerpiece filled with dried flowers.

Bannetons, or banettes, are used for shaping and proofing bread in boulangeries (bakeries) throughout France. The basket’s linen lining would prevent the dough from sticking to the sides. The cloth was often left unwashed to collect the yeast and flour, which would aid in the proofing process. Once the dough had risen and the bread was baked, it would then be put back in the basket for cooling.

Listing is for one (1) basket. We will choose the perfect one for your collection.

  • Found in France, circa 1910

  • Remnants of yeast and flour in the liner have resulted in an aged appearance

  • Each basket has a lovely patina

  • Small tears in the linen lining are present

  • The overall condition of each basket is consistent with age and use

  • Approximately 21.5” L x 9” W x 4.5” H

Available for pick up, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
