Ironstone, an antique pottery originally made by potters in Staffordshire, England, was developed in the 19th century as a cheaper, mass-produced alternative to porcelain. Originally made in transferware patterns, beginning in the 1840s, British potteries created the simplistic white ironstone for the American market where the use of undecorated tableware was more popular.
