Woven Grape Harvesting Basket

Sold

A French 19th century wicker grape harvesting basket. This harvester’s basket features two original woven rope straps, used to help the workers carry it on their back thus allowing for ease of picking grapes. Woven from willow and naturally aged with a beautiful patina, the basket would make a lovely focal piece hanging on a wall filled with a bouquet of dried botanicals.

Also known as a grape “hod” or “hotte”, this large basket, or “pannier”, was carried on a person's back and used to transport grapes or other agricultural produce. Hottes were used during the 19th and early 20th centuries for collecting grapes in vineyards. The grape picker would cut bunches of grapes and place them into the hotte, which would then be emptied into a crate to be transported to the cellar for the next step in wine making.

  • Found in France

  • Constructed from willow woven around wooden dowels

  • Wood base is stamped “MUROT” to signify the winery’s name

  • Upper portion is tied to the lower part of the basket with twine

  • Decorative ribbon added to the upper portion at some point (as found)

  • A few blemishes in the basket are present

  • Overall condition consistent with age and use
